Vienna (SK) — Isis claims to be responsible for the attack that killed four victims in Vienna. Egypt's Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world's greatest religious center, condemned the “terrorist attacks” in Vienna. The gunman, Kujtim Fejzulai, had pledged allegiance to Isis in an Instagram post hours before the attack. He used the name Abu Dujana al-Albani. Fejzulai also wore a fake suicide belt.

He was known to security services because of a previous attempt to join Isis in Syria in April 2019 that saw him jailed for 22 months. During legal proceedings, authorities tried to revoke Fejzulai's Austrian citizenship but interior minister Karl Nehammer said the attempt failed because of lack of evidence of ongoing terrorist activity. The media said that Fejzulai was following a deradicalisation programme and probation officer, and apparently convinced the authorities to be given a chance to take the case off the floor so that he was no longer a threat.

“The family couldn't believe what had happened with their son”. Fejzulai's lawyer, Nikolaus Rast, said that his client had seemed “completely harmless” at the time. Fejzulai's family “wasn't strictly religious at all. The family wasn't radical, it was a completely normal family”, he added.

“It was an attack out of hatred”, Austrian Chancellor Kurz said. “It was an attack out of hatred for our fundamental values, hatred for our way of life, hatred for our democracy in which all people have equal rights and dignity”.

Since 2014, Isis has called for supporters who cannot travel to its territories to launch attacks in their home countries.
