In a statement, Mrs. Conway, 53, said she is stepping down at the end of August to focus on her children.

Her husband, George, is a strong critic of the president. She added that her decision was “completely my choice, and that she would announce future plans in time”.

Mrs. Conway said that her children, like many other all over the country, are starting school remotely from home and, as millions of parent know, this requires “a level of attention and vigilance that is as unusual as these times”.
